Pilgrim Fathers
When the Pilgrims fleed from England to Holland, they were one of many groups who found refuge in Leiden. Holland was a tolerant nation, after having undergone the Spanish urge to convert, and having converted to the sober Calvinism.
The Pilgrims lead a steady life in Leiden, between 1609 untill 1620. They held their services in a chapel of the university.
William Bradford was member of the Wool-guild, reverend John Robinson lived at the place where later the Jean Pesijnhofje was built.
Robinson remaned in Leiden, died there and was buried in the Pieterskerk (1625). In the Pieterskerkchoorsteeg the house where William Brewster printed his seditious lampoons can be found.
In memory of the stay of the Pilgrim Fathers, the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum is arranged.

Churches
Leiden hosts many churches. From small clandestine churches to the huge Hooglandse Kerk. A special trail "lang de Leidse Kerken" which leads along most churches can be found at the VVV.
The Hooglandse Kerk was founded in 1314 as a wooden chapel. This chapel, dedicated to St. Pancras, would soon be replaced bij a brick building. The tower, which is completely implemented in the church, originates from that period.
It took untill the 16th century to built a new church at the same spot. The result is the current building. The church was never completed.
In the choir of the church a remarkable gravestone can be found; of Justinus van Nassau and his wife Anna de Merode. Justinus was a bastard sun of Willem van Oranje.
